Lip balm addicts, unite!!!! I’ve FINALLY gotten around to doing my big lip balm roundup post that I’ve been planning forever. Apologies for the months-long hiatus guys–I feel like I’m always apologizing to you but life really caught up to me this time! I’ve had a lot going on personally and also was finishing off the semester at school so before I knew it, one week turned into 3 turned into…3 1/2 months?!! Gosh I’ve missed blogging SO much…and especially chatting with all of you!

Incidentally, my makeup routine has fallen into somewhat of a slump as well…but that is a story for another post. All I really wanted to say was I missed you all bunches and damn, it’s good to be back!!! Anyway, back to the topic at hand: lip balms. Yaaaaaay!!!

Best Daily: Jack Black Intense Therapy Lip Balm SPF25 ($7.50 at

You guys have heard me wax poetic about this balm before so I’ll keep it short and sweet: it’s got a beautiful, rich, non-greasy formula that stays put on the lips for hours, moisturizes and heals at super speed, and comes in a variety of genuinely amazing scents (plus it’s been my personal experience that guys can’t resist ‘em!)–all topped off with a lovely dose of SPF25. There’s no question that this stuff is HG material–I’ve gone through more tubes than I can remember and cannot/will not live without it!

Best Sun-Protecting Balm: Supergoop! Acai Fusion Lip Balm SPF30* ($8.50 at

This little beauty earns the title of most sun-protecting balm. Not only does it contain a superior amount of SPF in it for a lip balm but it has a pleasant fruity scent (that’s in no way offensive), and feels very light and non-greasy on the lips. It’s the perfect daytime balm for those who spend a lot of time in the sun.

Best Overnight Balm: REN Vita Mineral Lip Balm* ($15.00 at

REN’s Vita Mineral Lip Balm is knockout product that I’ve been dying to share with you guys for a while now. It’s a really thick formula that takes a bit of squeezing to get out of the tube but once it’s on the lips, it is honestly in no way gloopy or sticky. It almost feels a bit like a more viscous version of the Osmia Organics Honey-Myyrh Lip repair; it has a similar slightly gooey texture (and I say gooey in the best way possible!) and feels absolutely amazing on the lips–very nourishing and deeply moisturizing. The rich consistency is what helps this balm stay put all night long. When you wake up, your lips are soft and supple.

The Vita Mineral Lip Balm shares the same beautiful orange scent as REN’s popular Glycol Lactic Radiance Renewal Mask. If you’ve used the mask before, it’s kinda weird at first because you associate the scent with the face mask but it really is nice and you get used to it after a while.

Best Organic/Best All Around Miracle-Worker: Osmia Organics Honey-Myrrh Lip Repair* ($22.00 at

Again, I’ve proclaimed my love for this particular lip balm high and low–on my blog, on twitter, to all my friends and family…it’s just that good! It has my favorite consistency of  any balm I’ve ever tried–and that’s including my beloved Jack Black balm. It’s just so…luscious; it’s rich and slightly gooey and smells absolutely amazing–exactly how you’d imagine a honey lip balm to be. It stays put on my lips for hours and hours and can heal all manner of janky lips overnight. And if that weren’t enough, you can rest easy knowing that Osmia Organics crafts each pot lovingly using only the best organic ingredients out there. This balm is indeed the bomb (I’m sorry, I just had to).

Best International Sensation: Nuxe Reve de Miel* ($19.00 at

You cannot possibly be a beauty blogger/regular peruser of beauty blogs and tell me you haven’t ever heard of Nuxe’s infamous Reve de Miel Lip Balm–there is a whole lotta love for this balm out there! I will be very honest with you and say that if I were pressed to choose between this and the Osmia Organics Lip Repair, I’d go with the latter but I do quite enjoy this one and can definitely understand all the hype. This balm’s strength is not in its healing capabilities (though it does moisturize quite nicely, it doesn’t feel quite as nourishing as the Lip Repair so this balm works best for me when my lips are already in a healthy state) but in it’s lovely thick and creamy texture (that moisturizes for hours), fresh orange-zest scent, and the nice matte finish it leaves behind. Like so many bloggers have stated before, it’s perfect for those who don’t like any shine and works great as a base for lipsticks.

Best Luxe Balm: TATCHA Gold Camellia Nourishing Lip Balm* ($36.00 at

Okay–yes, the formula of this lip balm is lovely and yes, it’s very moisturizing and has the perfect consistency (not too thick or thin, cushiony), and the loveliest faint aroma of lush camellia but I think you and I both know that the real star of this gorgeous balm is it’s glimmering gold leaf overlay. I mean come on–it just doesn’t get much more high-end than this! And even though you may flinch at the price tag and want to believe that you’re only paying for a flashy looking standard lip balm, the truth is TATCHA’s Camellia Nourishing Lip Balm is worth its weight in gold in more ways than one.

The balm feels so delicious on the lips–it has a unique, almost jelly-like texture that moisturizes for hours. You might think that the balm would be too slippery or glossy or glittery because of the gold leaf but actually, it isn’t any of these things. It does have a very slight shine to it but it’s more of a natural shine; the gold leaf dissolves pretty quickly once you start messing with it and only leaves an extremely faint glimmer on the lips. So yes, this balm is not only really, really (REALLY!) pretty to look at, it can perform with the best of them as well.

Best Minty Balm: La Mer The Lip Balm ($50.00 at

I’ll admit, I wasn’t too terribly impressed by this lip balm when I first tried it. I don’t know what possessed me to spend $50 on a lip balm in the first place (I mean I am a self-professed lip balm addict but even $50 seemed like a bit of a reach to me), but man am I glad I did! First of all, I’m usually not a fan of minty balms; I always feel like they do more harm than good, leaving my lips feeling tight and dry and having to reapply every 10-15 minutes. But La Mer’s balm is different–the mint is extremely mild in their luxe version. It tastes and smells exactly like Tic Tac’s Fresh Mint flavor–it’s a very light, sweet mint with only the faintest hint of a cooling effect. And this baby can seriously do some damage (and by damage, I mean healing…)!!

When I was battling a lingering illness lately, I was so dehydrated and it seemed that no amount of water I drank could get rid of the tight, dry, flaky lips that plagued me. But after several nights of sleeping with my trusty do-it-all Jack Black balm and even Hourglass’ Lip Treatment Oil and still not seeing very much progress, I decided “why the heck not?!” and tried the La Mer balm overnight. (side note: Osmia Organics’ Lip Repair surely would’ve done the trick but I ran out and still have not repurchased since I have SO many gosh darn lip balms lying around that I figured I should at least finish 2 or 3 of them before I buy another one).

I had already tested it when my lips were in good condition and while I was happy with the results, I didn’t think it warranted the hefty price tag. But after using it overnight on my poor cracked lips, I was blown away. My lips had noticeably improved overnight and with a couple more nights use, they were healed. I know that the lovely Gummy Vision told me she had a similar experience with this balm as well (initially not too impressed but now in love after it revealed its healing prowess). So in short: best minty, healing balm ever!

Best Oil Formula: Hourglass N°28 Lip Treatment Oil* ($42.00 at

When it comes to healing lip oils, I haven’t had experience with many but compared to the ones I have tried in the past, Hourglass’ version is so different and superior in every single way that it’s not even fair to put them in the same category. This unique lip treatment contains 0.25 oz. of sumptuous lip healing goodness. It’s super rich and smells very fresh and invigorating (like cloves), can mend most lip issues in no time flat, and has a lovely and very practical pump-tube applicator complete with an antibacterial 24 karat gold cooling applicator tip. This one’s a true treat for all the senses.

Best Tinted: Fresh Sugar Tinted Lip Treatments SPF15 ($22.50 each at

Fresh really has no competition when it comes to tinted balms–their version is just so astounding in every way! They all have the same delightful lemony flavor (this coming from a girl who usually does not like lemon-scented products), contain SPF15, and come in a beautiful selection of tints that cannot be beat. There is a color for everyone, and every color is flattering on just about everyone, too! And if all that weren’t enough, these babies are supremely moisturizing as well! $22.50 may seem like a lot of a “lip balm” but consider these the army knives of lip balms–they do it all, and they do it well.

Best Drugstore Balms: Aquaphor Healing Ointment ($6.79 for a pack of 2 at Ah, good old trusty Aquaphor….there’s nothing quite like it. I have mentioned this before but I am totally hooked on Aquaphor–it just works for everything! I keep a big tube on my desk for dry, flaky patches of skin, rough elbows and knees, cuticles, etc. Then, I usually have at least 3 or 4 of the mini tubes stashed around my person at any given time–they’re in my purse, pockets, car… There’s a reason I really believe in Aquaphor: it’s simple and it works!

When I got into a car accident a couple of years ago and suffered from some pretty gnarly chemical burns on my face and lips from the airbag, my dermatologist gave me several tubes of Aquaphor and told me to go to town with it and just spread it everywhere. And go to town, I did–I faithfully applied heaping doses of it all over my blistering burns for weeks and after about a month, they scabs peeled away and I was left with not a single scar on my face. So it’s not only really great on the lips but just about everywhere else too!

Best Not-so-Basic Petroleum Balm: Avon Moisture Therapy Lip Ointment SPF15 ($3.00 at

Avon’s lip balm is simple and straight-foward: it’s pretty much petroleum with an added SPF15. It’s fragrance-free and great for sensitive lips. So for those of you who like to keep it really basic but still do want just a bit of sun protection, Avon’s balm is the way to go.

So, there you have it–my list of really standout lip balms that I love love love! What about you guys–what are some lip balms that you can’t live without?? Please share, I am always game to try out new ones! :D

This really is the mother of all lip balm posts. Welcome back, Becca, my love! :D

I finally picked up a Jack Black and it’s really good. (I got the tea flavour minus the berry.) I like that it has SPF in it.

Have you seen that the Fresh ones have a new one now called Tulip? I think they’re going to run out of flowers soon, lol.

LOL thank you, Liz dearest!!! ;D

And a REGULAR TEA FLAVORED JACK BLACK????? AND and a new Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment–and here I thought I was all caught up on shades!!! Why have I not heard of these sooner?? Gah–I am Googling now!

Thank you for the heads up love!! <3

HE-LLO, darling! Stop with the apologies – but I sure am glad to ‘see’ you :)

Honestly, I’m still searching for my HG lipbalm(s). I’ve only tried the Jack Black, Fresh and Osmia options from here, and there were things I loved about each but ultimately they didn’t love my lips. Right now I AM hooked on CoverFX’s Lip Treat-mint, it has SPF in it and it gives my lips a glorious sheen. It’s probably one of the better ones I’ve tried lately! One day I might spring for the Hourglass one, we’ll see…

TOYAAAAA!!! Oh my dear I am so happy to hear from you!! :D :D

I’m sorry you didn’t fall head over heels for the Jack Black and Osmia–those two are the heavy hitters on my list but now I am super curious about the CoverFX one. Is it super minty/cooling?? That’s the one thing I generally cannot stand in a lip balm…

Awesome post! I too am a balm junkie so I enjoyed this post extra lots. ;) I am sorry about your car accident and I’m glad you’re okay. I too learned of Aquaphor’s amazing healing prowess after a run-in with an airbag (well, more so a minivan that caused me to be introduced to my airbag and the taughtness of my seat belt). That stuff healed my seat belt “bite” in a matter of days! I already loved Aquaphor before, but after that, it was cemented in my balm hall of fame! Have you tried the Bite Agave Lip Mask? Fabulousity, I tell ya. It’s topped all previous HG night repair balms.

    • becca June 10, 2014 at 8:30 pm #

Thank you so much, Kristen! It’s good to hear from you again–how are you?

And I’m glad to hear YOU’RE okay after your seat belt/airbag run-in too! Was this recent?? My accident was almost two years ago now so I’m really fine, though I was so scared at the time I’d be scarred for life :P Gotta love the Aquaphor!

And NO–have not tried the Bite Beauty lip mask. I remember reading a press release when it first came out and I was really curious but then kinda forgot…you have officially peaked my interest and now I MUST try it!! :P lol

  4. Kiss & Make-up June 11, 2014 at 9:15 am #

Awesome picks! I try to take good care of my lips. Under normal circumstances I use a super rich balm bar with organic butters and oils, and when I go out in the sun I use a lip balm with SPF. I’ve never tried a real specialty lip treatment though.

    • becca June 11, 2014 at 11:45 pm #

Thanks hon! May I ask which specific balm bar you use? Is that a multi-purpose product for all over the body as well? Sounds intriguing, for sure! :D

  5. Marianna June 13, 2014 at 10:18 pm #

Yay! A new post :) Thank you for sharing this! I can’t believe I’ve never heard of the Osmia Lip Repair – it sounds fantastic. Love the Fresh Sugar tinted balms!

    • becca June 16, 2014 at 12:04 am #

OMG, really Marianna–do yourself a huge favor and check out the Lip Repair IMMEDIATELY! It’s one of my best discoveries in the last several years, I think–it’s THAT much of a gamechanger for me! Have you tried the Nuxe Reve de Miel? I personally think the Lip Repair is a million times better so if you have tried it, just lettin you know ;)

  6. Beauty Box June 28, 2014 at 6:34 pm #

Welcome back! So happy to see a post here – and a great one on lip balms. I’m blown away by what you said about the La Mer lip balm – the price tag is no surprise but to beat all the other good balms you mentioned. The most expensive lip balm I’ve ever purchased was the Dior one (in a tube) – it really was awesome and gave my lips a gorgeous flush for no-makeup days. So far the Nuxe balm has never failed me in healing dry cracked lips. It’s not one for wearing in the day though which is my only complaint but you know there are balms for every occasion ;)

    • becca June 29, 2014 at 1:02 am #

Aw thank you so much my dear–you’re too sweet, as always :) How have you been?

And are you talking about the Dior Lip Glow balm?? I was THISCLOSE to purchasing it the other day when I purchased the Dior primer as well but at the last minute, I put it back for some reason. Now I’ll definitely have to go back for it!
