Let me start off with just this: LOOK AT THE CUTE KITTIEEEESSSS!!!!!!…ok sorry about that–just had to get that out. Now that we’ve established the adorable awesomeness of the kitten compact, let’s get on with this post.
For spring 2014, Paul & Joe have released a new line of Eye Color Trios! There are 8 stunning trios to choose from. Observe:
–clockwise from top: 01 Breakfast in Bed, 04 Tree-Shaded Walkway, 03 Le Jardin des Fleurs/Garden of Flowers, 07 Stormy Weather, 05 Cherry Blossom, 08 Night Café, 02 Mon Petit Chaton, 06 April in Paris–
You can see why I’m going crazy for these guys–each and every color combination screams happiness and springtime–particularly 03 Le Jardin des Fleurs/Garden of Flowers and 06 April in Paris. And the delicate brightness and shimmer that these exude…I’ll take one of each, please!
And if all that weren’t enough, P&J also released 3 limited-edition spring-inspired compacts (sold separately) for the occasion, which you can see in the image above. 001 is the one seen all the way at the bottom, 002 is the kitten one in the middle row that I have, and 003 is the compact in the top row (love that one!). If none of those tickle your fancy (which, let’s face it, is downright impossible, in my opinion), there’s always the classic compact. Also worth mentioning is that these compacts fit not only the Eye Color Trios but the Cheek Color duos, as well (see my review of Ombrage and Cinema here if you haven’t already. They’re gorgeous!). If you choose to forgo a compact altogether, you can just keep your trio housed in the cute clear, plastic case that it comes packed in (again, refer to my review of the Cheek Color Duos to see a picture of the case).
The compact is made of sturdy cardboard and is easy to open and close. The lid is magnetized so the lid is secured in place. The inside of the compact is magnetized as well and holds the shadows nicely. There’s also a small opening at the very front of the well that holds the shadow. It’s large enough to fit the tip of your finger so you can easily change out the shadows or blush within anytime you want–no prying necessary or risk of denting your precious powders inside.

Alright, moving right along to the actual shadows themselves: Mon Petit Chaton (My Little Kitty) is described as “a sweet and sexy trio of browns”. On the far left is a pale, gilded golden-champagne shade. It’s more fine micro-shimmer than actual pigment but it’s so soft and pretty and pairs beautifully with the other shades. The middle shade (my absolute FAVORITE new shadow!) is an equally beautiful shimmering, light-medium coppery golden-brown. On my lids, it takes on an almost peachy-copper hue and is so, so flattering! While pretty, it doesn’t look too unique in the pan but it really does transform on the skin! And finally, on the right is a deep, rich, satiny cocoa.
The shadows are scented with Paul & Joe’s delightful go-to powdery-floral fragrance. It’s light and pleasant and I could really sniff at it all day long–seriously. It’s right up there with Guerlain’s scented powders for me so if you enjoy that particular scent, you’ll love this one (and vice-versa, of course).
I’ve noticed that Paul & Joe’s powder products always lean on the sheerer side and Mon Petit Chaton is no exception. It’s not that they’re not pigmented, they just apply a bit softer, which I personally love–but of course, I tend to favor these types of powders whether in shadow or blush form since they are so easy to apply. As you can see from my swatch photos below, it’s super easy to build the color up though, making this an incredibly versatile trio.
All 3 shades are velveteen-soft and oh-so-easy to work with. Blending is definitely not necessary–these shadows are that easy to apply!–but know that if you do need to blend out the darkest shade a bit, it does so with complete ease.
Over a primer, the two darker shades lasted all day long without a hitch. However, the lightest shimmer shade lasted only about 4 hours before fading away almost entirely. There was a bit of shimmer left but it had unfortunately migrated into my crease.
Still, overall the trio is a real winner. The shades seem basic in the pan but they really pop on the skin! And with the fun added touch of the adorable LE compact, Mon Petit Chaton has secured a permanent spot in my shadow rotation for spring, summer…whenever! Can’t wait to collect a few more of these. Which ones caught your eye?
»»Pricing: Eye Color Trio-$35/0.1 oz. (3 g.), Compact-$10
»»Recommended for: those who are partial to a softer eye; lovers of all things cute!
»»Overall Rating: A overall because I love everything else about this trio but I’d give the lightest shade a B- on its own
