Let me start off with just this: LOOK AT THE CUTE KITTIEEEESSSS!!!!!!…ok sorry about that–just had to get that out. :P Now that we’ve established the adorable awesomeness of the kitten compact, let’s get on with this post.

For spring 2014, Paul & Joe have released a new line of Eye Color Trios! There are 8 stunning trios to choose from. Observe:

–clockwise from top: 01 Breakfast in Bed, 04 Tree-Shaded Walkway, 03 Le Jardin des Fleurs/Garden of Flowers, 07 Stormy Weather, 05 Cherry Blossom, 08 Night Café, 02 Mon Petit Chaton, 06 April in Paris–

You can see why I’m going crazy for these guys–each and every color combination screams happiness and springtime–particularly 03 Le Jardin des Fleurs/Garden of Flowers and 06 April in Paris. And the delicate brightness and shimmer that these exude…I’ll take one of each, please! :)

And if all that weren’t enough, P&J also released 3 limited-edition spring-inspired compacts (sold separately) for the occasion, which you can see in the image above. 001 is the one seen all the way at the bottom, 002 is the kitten one in the middle row that I have, and 003 is the compact in the top row (love that one!). If none of those tickle your fancy (which, let’s face it, is downright impossible, in my opinion), there’s always the classic compact. Also worth mentioning is that these compacts fit not only the Eye Color Trios but the Cheek Color duos, as well (see my review of Ombrage and Cinema here if you haven’t already. They’re gorgeous!). If you choose to forgo a compact altogether, you can just keep your trio housed in the cute clear, plastic case that it comes packed in (again, refer to my review of the Cheek Color Duos to see a picture of the case).

The compact is made of sturdy cardboard and is easy to open and close. The lid is magnetized so the lid is secured in place. The inside of the compact is magnetized as well and holds the shadows nicely. There’s also a small opening at the very front of the well that holds the shadow. It’s large enough to fit the tip of your finger so you can easily change out the shadows or blush within anytime you want–no prying necessary or risk of denting your precious powders inside.

Alright, moving right along to the actual shadows themselves: Mon Petit Chaton (My Little Kitty) is described as “a sweet and sexy trio of browns”. On the far left is a pale, gilded golden-champagne shade. It’s more fine micro-shimmer than actual pigment but it’s so soft and pretty and pairs beautifully with the other shades. The middle shade (my absolute FAVORITE new shadow!) is an equally beautiful shimmering, light-medium coppery golden-brown. On my lids, it takes on an almost peachy-copper hue and is so, so flattering! While pretty, it doesn’t look too unique in the pan but it really does transform on the skin! And finally, on the right is a deep, rich, satiny cocoa.

The shadows are scented with Paul & Joe’s delightful go-to powdery-floral fragrance. It’s light and pleasant and I could  really sniff at it all day long–seriously. It’s right up there with Guerlain’s scented powders for me so if you enjoy that particular scent, you’ll love this one (and vice-versa, of course).

I’ve noticed that Paul & Joe’s powder products always lean on the sheerer side and Mon Petit Chaton is no exception. It’s not that they’re not pigmented, they just apply a bit softer, which I personally love–but of course, I tend to favor these types of powders whether in shadow or blush form since they are so easy to apply. As you can see from my swatch photos below, it’s super easy to build the color up though, making this an incredibly versatile trio.

All 3 shades are velveteen-soft and oh-so-easy to work with. Blending is definitely not necessary–these shadows are that easy to apply!–but know that if you do need to blend out the darkest shade a bit, it does so with complete ease.

Over a primer, the two darker shades lasted all day long without a hitch. However, the lightest shimmer shade lasted only about 4 hours before fading away almost entirely. There was a bit of shimmer left but it had unfortunately migrated into my crease.

Still, overall the trio is a real winner. The shades seem basic in the pan but they really pop on the skin! And with the fun added touch of the adorable LE compact, Mon Petit Chaton has secured a permanent spot in my shadow rotation for spring, summer…whenever! Can’t wait to collect a few more of these. Which ones caught your eye?

ADORABLE! I have a weak spot for refillable makeup packaging as well and P&J is so cute. I remember when they were at Sephora a long time ago. The only thing I tried was blotting papers before the brand pulled out and now I have to hit really obscure corners in town to snag their makeup. The swatches are gorgeous. Was just thinking I have way too many neutrals, but these are tempting indeed. :)

I never seem to check out really cool brands when they’re STILL AVAILABLE at Sephora. It’s only after they’re gone that I start kicking myself :P But yes, LOVE the P&J LE compacts–way too cute for words!

And I’m serious about this particular trio–when I first got it, I was thinking “oh pretty, but I have SO many neutrals” but then when I actually tried it on, I was blown away. The slightly peachy tone of the coppery-brown looks so soft and unique and pretty on the lids! I’m swooning over that one…:D

I have something against product / packaging sold separately. I don’t know… many Japanese brands do that and it irks me to no end. Then again, for powders, I’d just buy the refill and not the case, so I’d save some money :-)

LOL I swear, I usually do too–I always think “WTF is the point??!” but these are SO. FREAKING. CUTE. that I just can’t be mad. I think it’s also easier to swallow since the compact is only $10 :)

I want April In Paris!!! WOW it’s like perfect! I have nothing like that one! I’ll have to look for it!

Paul & Joe have amazing packaging! The middle and right shadows apply pigmented enough in my books (and I love UD shadows) but the left shadow that is shimmery reminds me of a lot of Japanese shimmery shadows – they just impart more glittery shimmer on top of eyeshadows. I would def agree that these shadows lean more towards Asian tastes.

See I don’t have that much experience with these types of Japanese brands so I guess I didn’t think of that before–but now that you mention it, I suppose they are quite authentic in that sense! I really do like the light, shimmery shade–it’s very pretty–but I do wish that it stayed put longer…which I guess is hard to do with something that is more glittery micro-shimmer than actual pigment. Still, I really do love this little trio a lot :)

So beautiful and pigmented. I think this trio is bound to be used very often. I love neutrals.

    • becca March 11, 2014 at 3:22 am #

Ooh I seriously cannot get enough of it, Jacqueline! The subtle pink tones to the coppery-brown shade is to DIE for! :D Really enjoying this trio and really, really, REALLY want to get more of them! Maybe as a treat to myself once I finish my midterms :P :D

  7. Makeup Morsels March 2, 2014 at 1:25 pm #

Ohhh Paul & Joe, you get me with your packaging every single time. Flipping out over the adorable kitties & the finish of those eyeshadows is just perfection. I LOVE April in Paris, arghhh do I need another trio? Maybe I do…

    • becca March 11, 2014 at 3:22 am #

Oh methinks you definitely DO, MM dear! ;) lol!

  8. Icaria March 5, 2014 at 1:51 pm #

Ooooh kitties!!! This is such a cute brand! I love it when colors are buildable especially dark ones. I can see why Mon Petit Chaton is in rotation!

    • becca March 11, 2014 at 3:24 am #

I agree! So many people disregard the sheerer eyeshadows but I love being able to perfectly control the level of intensity! I think I have a phobia of really dark, overdone, obvious makeup though, so I do favor sheer powders more often than not :)

  9. Toya March 24, 2014 at 11:15 am #

I do like the refillable option, though I’ve never really used a product like that! I’m surprized by how much I like the shimmering ivory shade – usually not my bag, just LOVING how it looks on your skin, Becca!

    • becca March 27, 2014 at 2:34 am #

Aw thanks, Toya! Yeah it certainly is so gorgeous and seems a bit playful and light-hearted for spring…perfect! I only wish it lasted longer on me :/ curse these oily lids of mine!!! *shakes fist!* :P

Hope all is well, my dear!
