The Sample–Summer Cheeks Edition: Hourglass Aura Sheer Cheek Stain in Flush & Petal (Review, Swatches & Photos)

Okay I admit, this post was supposed to go up weeks ago but, as many of you know, I have just been so busy at work and with life in general that I have had zero time for blogging. :/ But though summer is technically over and school has begun, the weather is just as sweltering as ever (at least it is here). Actually, this summer really wasn’t all that bad weather-wise until a couple of weeks ago when a massive heat wave hit these parts. Since then, the AC has been on round the clock and light, comfortable, melt-proof makeup is more necessary than ever! So, for my second Summer Cheeks Post (check out the first here), I’ve decided to shine the spotlight on Hourglass’ Aura Sheer Cheek Stains.

The cheek stain is described as a “lightweight, water-based stain that imbues skin with a subtle, lit-from-within glow. The hydrating formula creates radiant, natural color that lasts all day.” I was sent Flush and Petal to review. Flush is a brightened, light-medium strawberry-pink. Petal is a light peachy-pink with a hint of a shimmering golden luminosity. Both shades are just lovely!

The stains come packaged in a cute chubby tube. The white applicator tip is described as a sponge applicator but I wouldn’t quite call it that. It is soft and has a bit of give but it’s not spongy at all. The fabric covering the applicator is very smooth and feels a bit like polyester mesh of some sort (you know the material basketball shorts are made of? It feels a bit like that except smoother/silkier and with more of a screen-like texture).

To use, just twist the base of the tube. You’ll hear about 9 clicks for every full rotation; it takes approximately 25 to 26 full rotations (or 233 clicks…at least that’s how many it took me) until the product finally comes up. But once it does, it’s quite easy to push more product up with a simple fraction of a turn. The click mechanism is very sensitive and easy to control.

–Flush on left, Petal on right–

The product itself has a very silky, thin gel consistency. The formula is water based, which you can definitely feel–the product is very light and cooling on the skin. As you can imagine, these blushes blend absolutely beautifully. It’s like applying a serum–it glides across the skin and sinks in quickly. The formula also feels lightly hydrating, so when I use it on my lips, they don’t feel dried out and I don’t feel the need to top it off with a clear balm (though I do anyway, since I like how it looks :)).

As the name implies, these cheek stains are indeed quite sheer, making them extremely easy to use/apply–especially for cheek stain noobs and those who are frightened when they hear the word  ”stain” when used in the context of blush. You can use the applicator tip to apply or your finger, whichever you prefer. The product does dry pretty quickly though, so I suggest working quickly by dotting the product on the cheeks (only a tiny bit is necessary! You can always add more if need be!),  then blending with fingers to yield the most even, natural look while avoiding unfortunate patchiness.

–Flush on left (heavy and blended), Petal on right (ditto)–

And to answer your next question: yes, these bad boys do in fact stay on all. day. long. Even on my super oily skin. In 100 degree weather. Did I mention it was muggy as all heck too?? So yeah, you’re good to go with these guys. Pretty and tough–just the way I like my blush. :)

These Aura Sheer Cheek Stains have been out for a while but they’re new to me and they definitely deserve the shoutout. There is one other shade, Rouge, that I did not test–3 shades in all. Minimal but when you have a product that works this good, who needs a ton of options? Besides, the point is to look like you’re not wearing anything (but to still look super flushed and glowy) and, trust me, you’ll look like just that if you’re wearing one of these. Yay!

These cheek stains sound absolutely divine…can’t expect less from Hourglass…!

Exactly! I have never ever been disappointed with anything I’ve tried from the brand. They’re certainly tops in my book! :)

Hope you had a nice summer, my dear!

These colors look beautiful especially Petal but I’m not sure about the packaging, seems a little messy. :(

    • becca September 16, 2013 at 1:10 pm #

It is a bit messy…but I love the formula so much that I really don’t care!! :P

LOL that’s good to know! :)

I have this in Petal and I love mine too. flush looks like an awesome colour.

Aren’t they great?? I think I may love these more than the Josie Maran Cheek Gelees. Yeah those have a super cool, interesting texture but these are just so darn refreshing and light! :D

Oh, those are so pretty. Marcelle (a Canadian brand) had a gel blush out this summer with a similar style of applicator, but the colours weren’t as juicy and lovely as the Hourglass ones.

    • becca September 16, 2013 at 1:12 pm #

Aw really? That’s too bad. Yeah, Hourglass only makes three shades but all 3 are shades that will flatter EVERYONE and that everyone loves to wear, in my opinion. Pricey but very worth it! :)

Hey Becca, I haven’t tried these yet but now I am seriously tempted! Petal in particular looks positively edible!

    • becca September 16, 2013 at 5:40 pm #

Oh you really have to, Sunny! They are GORGEOUS and so, so easy to work with! I always get nervous when I hear “stain” but these are quite sheer and easy to build up plus look super natural! :)

  6. Tracy@Beauty Reflections September 16, 2013 at 5:19 pm #

I have Petal and although I like it, it can be a bit on the shimmery side for me. It’s more of an indoor blush for Tracy hahaha! ;)

    • becca September 16, 2013 at 5:41 pm #

I do prefer Flush myself–that strawberry pink is so darn flattering and natural-looking!–but Petal is still a close second. I only find it too shimmery if I build it up a lot. If I just stick with a single layer, it’s not only very subtle but a bit more wearable, I think :)

Welcome back, Becca and I missed you! Both these cheek stains look gorgeous :-) I just ordered the powder in Diffused Light, so hopefully it’s really as good as what everyone says. That’s my first Hourglass product ever!

    • becca September 16, 2013 at 10:48 pm #

Ahh THANK YOU, dearest Lily!!! I missed you so much too–you have NO idea. Works been crazy hectic :/ How have you been?

And I really hope you like the powder! I have Radiant Light and honestly can’t say I like it as a setting powder (too dark, too sparkly, doesn’t keep my SUPER oily skin matte…) but as a VERY subtle bronzer/highlighter, I like it!! :) Good luck–can’t wait to read your thoughts on it!

  8. Toya September 17, 2013 at 12:14 pm #

    Hiiii hun!!!! :D Miss ya!

I have been interested in trying these for AGES, and as usually you’re kind of pushing me over the edge. I’ll have to give them a real solid look next time I’m in Sephora – I’m starting to compile my wishlist for the fall sale, and one of these just might land on it!

    • becca September 20, 2013 at 5:44 pm #

Aww I miss you so much too, girl! How was your summer–how are things?? Good I hope!! :D

These are great–really long-wearing yet subtle. I think Rouge would look fabulous on you!! What else has made your wishlist Toya?? I haven’t been very up to date with new releases lately so I’m curious to know! ;)

i always sort of wanted one of these :) Back on the list it goes! and thank you for writing how many clicks, cause I am always the one sitting there twisting and thinking it is taking far too long and i have a broken one or i am doing something wrong. hahahah!

    • becca September 20, 2013 at 5:53 pm #

Haha I do the same thing. :P On Hourglass’ site, they say approximately 20 clicks or more but I was there clicking away for quite a while. I thought the blush would never come up! LOL!

    Hi Becca,
Hourglass has lots of gorgeous products!
I love the fact that this cheek stain is sheer so it helps to prevent over applying the product. And yay to products that stays the whole day! The weather is Singapore is so humid that we tend to sweat more so products like this is suitable for me :)

    • becca October 22, 2013 at 4:59 pm #

I agree–Hourglass is amazing! The weather where I live is not humid (thank goodness) or TOO hot but it does get pretty warm sometimes and I have very oily skin year round so it’s always great for me to find such a long-lasting product! :)
