As a makeup devotee, there are many brands that I love–I could never choose just one favorite. It’s always a treat to see what brands’ have in store for each new seasonal collection. But there is one brand’s collections in particular that I’ve come to really look forward to lately; that brand is Paul & Joe. My first experience with the brand was when I tested their Holiday 2012 set last year. Since then, I’ve eagerly awaited each new collection they’ve put out. To me, Paul & Joe’s collections always seem so fresh and spirited, no matter what the season. They just have a way of injecting their particular brand of charm and whimsy to everything they do and every product they put out.

The Summer Creation 2013 Beach Baby collection includes 20 pieces, including 5 limited-edition shades of their Eye Gloss & Lip Gloss Duos (Santa Monica, Nice, Monaco, Maui, Bahamas). Today, I’ll be showing you the Eye Gloss & Lip Gloss Duos in 003 Monaco and 004 Maui.

Maui ingredients (click to enlarge):

Monaco is described as having “sandy beige notes [that] add a natural glow”. The eyeshadow is a very sheer, antiqued-golden brown shot through with a generous helping of gold shimmer and very fine, silvery micro-glitter. The lip gloss end is a very pale milky-beige that goes on translucent. It contains some pink and multi-tonal micro-shimmer that can be seen in the tube but once on the lips, it’s not very noticeable at all. The Maui duo is described as a nectarine and lemon that “add[s] a kiss of citrus style”. The eyeshadow is a light, lemony-gold with iridescent pink and golden micro-shimmer. The lip gloss is a stunning mid-tone, slightly milky coral-orange.

The Eye Gloss & Lip Gloss Duo comes packaged in a plastic double-ended wand. The tubes holding the product unscrew and reveal a doe-foot applicator on each side. Both ends are printed in white with Paul & Joe’s stunning chrysanthemum prints.

Both the eye glosses and lip glosses have the very faint traditional Paul & Joe fragrance to them; it’s really not heavy at all. I say if you’re going to add fragrance to a product, make it light and innocuous at least. Paul & Joe has done just that so I think that even though it contains fragrance, even those with sensitive noses will be able to handle these.

The Eye Glosses are very light and smooth. They are water-based and as such, feel very cool and wet on the eyes–very refreshing. Even though it’s quite a wet formula, the shadows do dry down pretty quickly–in under a minute–especially if you blend them out with either a finger or brush. The thicker the layer, the longer it will take to set.

Both shades are fairly sheer, the Monaco shadow quite a bit sheerer than the Maui one. You can layer the shadow for more intense pigment. However, it is worth noting that if you apply too thick a layer and fail to blend it out, it can end up looking a bit dry and crusty. Not to worry though–as long as you apply one thin, even layer at a time and blend between each layer, you’ll be fine and be able to build up the opacity easily. I got the best results when I dotted the doe-foot applicator along my lid about 3-4 times then used my finger to blend the eyeshadow across my lid in a gentle patting motion.

The Monaco gloss, as I mentioned, goes on clear, basically. I was a bit disappointed with it and do wish it were a hair more pigmented. But it is a nice clear gloss and layers beautifully over my stains and lipsticks. Maui, on the other hand, is surprisingly pigmented. The touch of milkiness really adds a beautiful finish to the lips. It is hands-down my new absolute favorite lip gloss! Both lip glosses had a nice medium consistency that helped it stay put on the lips for about 4 1/2 hours. They kept my lips moisturized and weren’t sticky at all.

Without primer, both shadows showed a tiny amount of creasing just at the inner corner of my lid within about 2 hours. With primer, the shadows lasted about 7 1/2 hours before I saw a bit of creasing. Fortunately, I do want to note that the creasing isn’t noticeable at all since both shades are very shimmery and not super pigment heavy. I didn’t experience any migration or fall-out from the micro-glitter/shimmer.

Overall, I like these a lot and am very glad to have them join my makeup arsenal for summer. These duos won’t be for everyone but for Paul & Joe lovers and anyone looking for a fun, shiny, easy-to-wear 2-in-1 product, you have to check these out. I have to say, they pair beautifully with clean, minimal makeup. Just a bare complexion with perhaps a slight, creamy flush on the cheeks, a bit of black or, better yet, dark brown liner smudged onto the upper lashline, and black mascara. Add the eye gloss (I like to just apply it across my lid, being careful not to extend it too far past the crease because then, it’s kind of a “controlled” sparkle!) and lip gloss and you’ll be set for the bright, sunshine-y day. It feels very effortless and fun–which is the way makeup is supposed to be during the summer! :D

Me too, me too!! :D ;)

These look very nice especially the eye gloss Monaco.

    • becca May 26, 2013 at 2:22 am #

I love the Monaco Eye Gloss too! That, paired with the Maui Lip Gloss, is SOOOOO gorgeous! I have been loving that look lately. The Eye Gloss is just so much fun–it really shines and looks like shimmering sands! :D

  3. Sunny May 26, 2013 at 5:14 am #

The idea is interesting! I like the taupe shadow and coral gloss. Too bad that’s not a set ;)

    • becca May 26, 2013 at 8:02 am #

I know that would be even cuter! It’d also be perfect since I have taken to using Monaco’s shadow and Maui’s lip gloss lately–they compliment each other perfectly. And OMG I am so in love with that coral gloss–it’s stunning on the lips! :D

I’ve never been a fan of Paul & Joe, but these are pretty cute. I’m not much of a lip gloss person, but the eye glosses look good :-)

    • becca May 26, 2013 at 8:35 pm #

Aw really? That’s too bad. Yeah the shadows definitely aren’t the longest-wearing I’ve come across but they’re definitely decent and they look SO sparkly and fun on the eyes :D

  5. Larie May 26, 2013 at 9:39 am #

The colors are so pretty and summery! I think the idea is pretty cool, but I think I just like all of my things separate, haha. I can’t stand eye+cheek+lip palettes, for example.

    • becca May 26, 2013 at 8:37 pm #

LOL that makes sense. I don’t mind combo palettes if it’s just powder blush and powder eyeshadow or something but don’t like when they mix cream products with powder. It’s fun at first but ultimately, the creams will always get nasty and powdery :/

  6. Tracy@Beauty Reflections May 26, 2013 at 11:32 am #

These are pretty!! I like liquid shadows like these a bit better than cream shadows, as I find they last better on my oily lids.

    • becca May 26, 2013 at 8:38 pm #

Really? What are some good liquid shadows that you’ve tried, Tracy? I find that creams usually wear better but maybe that’s because I’m comparing them to the new-age long-wearing cream formulas :P

  7. Tiffany May 26, 2013 at 4:11 pm #

Ooo, I particularly like the Maui duo! I’ve never tried anything from Paul & Joe but I love their packaging :)

    • becca May 26, 2013 at 8:39 pm #

Oh gosh, me too–their packaging ALWAYS gets to me. Cutest packaged line ever! :D

I am in LOVE with the Maui gloss–oh it’s so, so pretty! I highly recommend checking that one out!

  8. Kiss & Make-up May 27, 2013 at 3:46 am #

Not bad, I think I’d like it!

    • becca May 27, 2013 at 1:50 pm #

I think you would too! Paul & Joe’s products area always so fun :)

  9. Catherine @ bcrueltyfree May 27, 2013 at 7:58 am #

Ooh I love the color of Monaco. I could see these being really great options for summer days when I just want to apply something quickly and go :)

    • becca May 27, 2013 at 1:51 pm #

I agree! I think the shadows are so sparkly that they really lend themselves beautifully to a very simple look, so they’re really the perfect grab-n-go product! :D

  10. Toya May 27, 2013 at 12:23 pm #

Paul & Joe are still on my ‘to try’ list – I’ve always been intrigued by their eye glosses, so glad to hear they’re a win, Becca! I love that Maui lip gloss too!!

    • becca May 27, 2013 at 1:52 pm #

OMG I LOVE Maui too! If you think it’s gorgeous in the swatches, it’s about 50 times prettier in person and on the lips!! You really have to get your hands on some Paul & Joe stat! I recommend the Cheek Color duos too :)

  11. Taylor May 28, 2013 at 10:07 am #

I love this layout! Consider me a sucker for a “beach babe” collection featuring seashells! I feel like I could use an eye gloss that applies cool right now, sounds lovely. The golden shade looks beautiful,

    • becca May 28, 2013 at 3:35 pm #

Then you will LOVE this one, Taylor! The cooling feeling is so nice on the eyes–very different! I think Maui would look gorgeous on you! :D

  12. Liz May 29, 2013 at 4:42 pm #

I was so digging the idea of eye glosses last year but they probably won’t work for my super creasy creasy lids. Paul & Joe are hard to access around here anyway. But they look super cute and fun!

    • becca May 29, 2013 at 5:49 pm #

Yeah def not the longest lasting…not without a primer anywhere. But seriously, the creasing doesn’t really show because the sparkle/shimmer is what really creases since the pigmentation is quite sheer. Definitely really fun to have though–I’ve been loving having that little bit of sparkle just on the lid and then matte everywhere else! :D

  13. Rainy Days & Lattes May 29, 2013 at 9:24 pm #

THANK YOU for the swatches! :) I’ve been looking into these!!

    • becca May 30, 2013 at 5:17 am #

Oh yay–glad to be of help! Gorgeous aren’t they?! :D Do you think you will be getting them? I LOVE Monaco’s shadow and Maui’s gloss–kinda wish they were together but love having both, anyway :)

  14. Beauty Box May 30, 2013 at 6:48 am #

I love Paul & Joe eye glosses…I bought the ones with only eye gloss and no lip gloss. You are right, they seem very watery but they dry very quickly and look like cream shadows. And you def need a primer. I once went without primer and it was a disaster!

    • becca May 30, 2013 at 3:09 pm #

Ooh pretty! Which shades do you have? I actually didn’t know about the eye glosses until I did this review. I really do like the cool, watery formula though–it feels so nice on the eyes! :D Are the ones you have as sparkly as these?

  15. Gummy May 30, 2013 at 7:30 pm #

Again…your pictures…so creative and amazing!!! I want your creativity!!! :-) I still haven’t tried paul and joe. I see it whenever I’m on beautyhabit but I haven’t caved…yet. For a first dip into the paul and joe pool what would you rec??

    • becca May 30, 2013 at 9:44 pm #

Aw thank you so much, Gummy!! :D I just like to have fun and use “props” whenever possible–it’s really fun to play around with different ones and see which works best! Of course it also takes a REALLY long time to do all that :P

For first time Paul & Joe purchases, I would def recommend the Cheek Color duos. I haven’t tried that much from Paul & Joe but that’s been my favorite so far. The shades are all SO gorgeous and I really love the softer pigmentation!

  16. Jenni @ lifeandlensofbeauty June 4, 2013 at 6:55 am #

I love those seashells in the background!! (Off topic i know)

i started to become drawn into P&J after their last holiday collection with the unicorns and the spring ones with the elephants <3

    • becca June 4, 2013 at 4:05 pm #

      Aw thank you, Jenni!! :D

I started with the Holiday collection, too!! Since then, I’ve been totally in love with each and every one of their seasonal collections–they’re always so bright and cheery and beautiful! :D Did you get one of the holiday sets too? What about from the spring collection–did you grab anything? I thought the swirly cotton candy face powder was gorgeous but I didn’t get it–I got 2 of the Cheek Color duos
