The Sample: Laura Mercier Caviar Stick Eye Colours in Amethyst and NEW SHADE Grey Pearl (Review, Swatches & Photos)

24 Mar

I recently found myself wandering the counters at Nordstrom when I came across a large display for the Laura Mercier’s Caviar Stick Eye Colours. I fully planned to walk away because despite all the glowing reviews that I had read for the product, I still just didn’t trust that it would be all that different from any other cream shadow on my oily lids (read: pretty but nowhere near long-lasting). But at the last minute I decided to have a little play and oh. my. gosh…it was seriously love at first swatch!

I ended up with 2 shades in my bag: Amethyst, one of the original shades, and Grey Pearl, one of the newer shades. Grey Pearl was released with 7 other shades for Winter 2013. It’s described as a “mauvy grey”. It’s a very soft, greyed-taupe with lovely purple-y tones. Amethyst, meanwhile, is described as a “soft mauve with pearl”. It’s a light-medium bronzy purplish-mauve with a dusting of bronze micro-shimmer.

These shadows are housed in a twist-up stick–it’s both convenient and easy to use. I did notice that Amethyst was slightly off-kilter and the opening was a little narrow so as a result, every time I would twist the shadow up or down, some of the shadow would get shaved off along the edges of the plastic. If you’ll notice though, Grey Pearl’s packaging is ever-so-slightly different from Amethyst’s. Among some of the minor changes: the tapered part of the “stick” on Grey Pearl is just a fraction wider than Amethyst’s, allowing the cream shadow more room to swivel up and down.

Grey Pearl is much easier to twist up and down than Amethyst. Also, if you reach the bottom of the shadow and keep trying to twist, Grey Pearl will click with each turn to indicate that there is no more product left. With Amethyst, when you reach the bottom, it just simply does not turn anymore. One last item worth mentioning is the cap. Grey Pearl’s cap does close more securely than Amethyst’s, shutting with a satisfying click. I feel like this will protect the product from drying out.

Since Amethyst is one of the originally released shades, I’m sure (or hoping, at least) that I just bought one with the old packaging and Grey Pearl’s packaging is indicative of how the Caviar Sticks are all packaged nowadays.

–as an aside, how gorgeous is the shimmer in both these shadows?!!–

The last gripe I have about these is the amount of product you get. As you can see from the pictures above, when fully extended Grey Pearl appears to have a small but sizeable chunk missing from the top when compared to Amethyst. I tried measuring the width of just the shadow part on both of these and they are the same size. So why is Grey Pearl missing so much product? Are all the Caviar Sticks the same size as Grey Pearl now or was this just a fluke? And if not, why is the net weight of both these shadows labeled as 0.05 oz.??

UPDATE: ironically, as I was swatching Amethyst, the tip broke off exactly where I drew a line through it in the picture above. So now, Grey Pearl and Amethyst are exactly the same length. Of course. Moral of the story? Be careful not to swivel too much product out when you use it–it will be much more fragile and may result in some of the product breaking off

But I don’t want to go through the whole post bitching and moaning because quite honestly, I am in love with these shadows! The texture is just insanely smooth–it’s literally everything you could ever hope for a cream shadow to be. It glides on like softened butter but isn’t soft or smooshy so that it’s hard to work with. It’s also crazy pigmented! I mean one swipe of these bad boys are you are literally set! And speaking of set, these shadows give you about 30 seconds of play time before they set to a pretty-much indestructible finish.

I really can’t stress enough how long-wearing these are–they really do not budge at all! I sometimes find that with many cream shadows, the base may be long-wearing but if you rub a finger across it a few times, all the shimmer will come off. You know what I’m talking about, right?! Well I was pleasantly surprised when I rubbed a finger over the swatches and absolutely nothing came off. Every bit of shimmer and color remained perfectly intact–scarily intact even. I really had to use some elbow-grease when I went to remove the swatches from my arm. I’ve never seen a cream shadow perform at this level before! Even with a dual-phase makeup remover, you really have to swipe the cotton pad back and forth several times to even begin to make a dent!

These shadows lasted just under 5 1/2 hours without primer on my very oily lids before I began to see a tiny bit of creasing just along the inner corner of my eye. The wear time is right up there with Bobbi Brown’s Long-Lasting Cream Shadow, which I tested these against. Over primer, it lasted all day without a hitch. Remember though, you have to give it time to set. Just close your eyes for 30 seconds and then you’ll be good to go. When I didn’t wait those 30 seconds, I experienced creasing within an hour. I also get the best results when I blend it out a little, either with a brush or my finger. If you want more intensity, layer the color, always blending between each layer.

Suffice it to say that these are my new go-to cream shadows and I fully plan on buying more! These will obviously be great year-round but I’m especially excited to use them during the summer as a quick way to add a bit of color and definition without having to fuss with a brush, primer, etc. There are 17 gorgeous shades in all so I suggest going to your nearest counter to swatch them all. Each and every one is so incredibly rich and beautiful, you’re really going to have your work cut out for you! Have you tried any of the Caviar Stick Eye Colours yet? What’s your favorite shade?

I really have nothing to add except that I LOVE these toooooo!!! OMG I thought I would never find anything that could match my oily lids, but these shadow sticks play hardball!!! The amethyst color is beautiful…even more gorgeous in person…grey pearl looks amazing too :-)

    • becca March 24, 2013 at 5:48 pm #

I know, me too! I am so, so impressed! It does not wear longer than Bobbi Brown’s Long-Wear Cream Shadows, which used to be the only cream shadows I could really wear, but there’s just something about the twist-up packaging and the gorgeous, rich colors that call to me! These Caviar Sticks are definitely my new favorite! I am curious to see if they are much different from Bobbi’s new shadow crayons though. I bet they are almost exactly alike but I still want to try them…:P

OOOO Grey Pearl is definitely something I’d love to check out! I’ve heard great things about these, and there are some shades I’m super interested in (like Sand Glow)! Glad to hear you found something that wears well on you, Becca!

    • becca March 24, 2013 at 5:48 pm #

I know, I think Sand Glow will be my next purchase! That and Khaki…and Orchid :P They’re so great–SO so easy to use and last for so long! I seriously am going to collect them all and then use only them during late spring and all of summer! :P haha

  3. Catherine (@bcrueltyfree) March 24, 2013 at 5:58 pm #

Both shades are so pretty, but I LOVE Pearl Grey. Glad to know these work so well! I feel like Laura Mercier is one of those brands that delivers high quality products reliably

    • becca March 24, 2013 at 6:29 pm #

Oh me too. I just LOVE Laura Mercier. Reliable is totally the word I would use to describe the brand too! It’s a paired down, elegant line that reliably puts out great quality products and colors that flatter many skin tones and never go out of style! Definitely one of my fave brands! Bobbi Brown used to be too but I feel like lately, I keep getting less and less excited with every passing collection :/ Maybe that’s just me though

  4. Liz March 24, 2013 at 7:13 pm #

Oh, man. There was a golden shade in this Caviar Stick that I was lemming quite badly during the post-holiday season. I didn’t test it for longer than a few hours, though, so I didn’t realize they were this good.

Again, these are very Becca-esque colours and very pretty! :D

    • becca March 24, 2013 at 8:21 pm #

LOL I know–I just can’t stop buying these types of shades. HELP ME, wifey!!! :P hahaha

Yeah I definitely plan on getting Seashell and Sand Glow next–possibly Orchid as well. Khaki is also really pretty…they will all be so great for summer, I can’t wait!! :D

      • The Procrastinator March 25, 2013 at 1:36 pm #

GAH I can’t get enough of these shades either! You and your beautiful swatches are notttt helping =P

        • becca March 25, 2013 at 2:32 pm #

Hahaha you HAVE to try these, hon! They are amazing!! :D

  5. Larie March 24, 2013 at 7:18 pm #

Gorgeous! I swatched amethyst in store and found the texture a little dry, but I think that might be because of the way they are stored – open, etc. I do think since they are essentially creams, they should probably not be left open, so I’m still considering these. Your swatches are gorgeous, and they do sound long-wearing!

    • becca March 24, 2013 at 8:22 pm #

Oh yeah, I would definitely still give them a shot, Larie. With the Jouer ones I had, I accidentally left the cap off them for a few hours and when I tried using them again, it felt a little dry until I kinda got it warmed up on my skin again and then they were fine. I’m sure the testers in-store are open much longer than that so don’t go by the tester quality at all! These are sooo, so smooth and glide like silk! :D

  6. Emi at Project Swatch March 24, 2013 at 7:21 pm #

Grey Pearl is so gorgeous! I have two caviar sticks – Khaki and Sand Glow (reviews coming eventually) and I think I know what my third one will be :)

    • becca March 24, 2013 at 8:23 pm #

Oooh you got 2 of the shades I am DYING to buy next! I also want Orchid and Seashell (or maybe Rosegold) but DEFINITELY Sand Glow! Can’t wait to hear your thoughts on them, Emi!

  7. Tiffany March 24, 2013 at 8:02 pm #

Yay! I love these. That’s really weird how yours have different amounts of product in them…I want to check mine too but I’m afraid I’ll accidentally break one of them off in the process :-/ I’m so glad you told me about Grey Pearl – I love it! I find that it doesn’t last as long on me as Amethyst for some reason, but it doesn’t really bother me all that much. Great review :)

    • becca March 24, 2013 at 8:26 pm #

Thanks Tiffany!! I’m so glad you got Grey Pearl–the color is just awesome! It’s my favorite shade to wear on the eyes! I did notice that when I tried rubbing both swatches, Grey Pearl did come off (after A LOT of vigorous rubbing with a napkin) a TINY bit more than Amethyst did but it honestly wasn’t enough for me to really say anything. I didn’t notice a difference on my eyes, at least.

Do you think you will purchase any other shades? I am dying for Sand Glow and Orchid and Khaki!!

  8. Taylor March 24, 2013 at 8:51 pm #

Ooh the caviar sticks! I adore them, I wear amethyst all the timea, I’m also loving pearl grey, the wear is just incredible, I agree. I love everything about them and I want to collect them all!

    • becca March 24, 2013 at 9:07 pm #

Ooh how many do you have, Taylor?? I didn’t know you had Grey Pearl too–I know you have Amethyst and Orchid! (I want Orchid so bad!!) :P I know, I am seriously wanting them all now. They will be getting a LOT of use from me during the summer so why not?! :D

  9. Teri March 24, 2013 at 9:31 pm #

These look so amazing! Now I really really want to try them! The parkle is pretty btw, I love it! I’m so happy to hear that they last too! Yaay! Here is me hopping to the counter! ^^

    • becca March 24, 2013 at 10:58 pm #

Hahah yay! I hope you do check them out–enjoy! I just know you’ll love them as much as I do! :D

  10. Yvonne March 25, 2013 at 12:28 am #

ooh, these are GORGEOUS! i’m new to the cream eyeshadows. i’ve only tried the giorgio armani ones, which are pretty great on me. i have dry skin. have you tried the ga ones? if so, are the laura mercer ones better? thanks!

    • becca March 25, 2013 at 12:51 am #

      Hi Yvonne!

I hadn’t heard that GA had a cream shadow. Do you mean the Eyes to Kill Intense shadows?? If so then yes, I have tried them!! I do really like the formula–it definitely feels like a cream, it’s so smooth! If you like those, then you will DEFINITELY like these Laura Mercier ones. They are actual cream shadows so they will suit your dry lids much better. They also last 5 1/2 on me so I imagine on you, they will last all day, no problem! They glide on like silk with no tugging and/or pulling and are extremely pigmented as well! Please try them–I think you’ll really, really like them! Oh and if you do try them, be sure to come back and let me know what you think!! :)

  11. Chris March 25, 2013 at 3:53 am #

I NEED to have grey pearl!

    • becca March 25, 2013 at 3:59 am #

Yes. Yes you do. ;) You will LOVE it–go get it now!! :P

  13. fairytalesandcoffee March 25, 2013 at 6:42 am #

    Grey Pearl is gorgeous.

    • becca March 25, 2013 at 2:32 pm #

      I know! I’m in love…:P

  14. Angie March 25, 2013 at 2:57 pm #

Oh wow! These ARE gorgeous and they sound amazing! The two shades you picked up are so beautiful. I am in love with Grey Pearl, but I am so curious now to find out what colors they have so I can get my hands on some! You have totally convinced me Becca. ;)

    • becca March 25, 2013 at 5:10 pm #

Yaaaay!! :D Haha I knew you wouldn’t be able to resist :P Yeah definitely go to a counter–they have some really gorgeous new(ish) shades that I think would look great on you! Off the top of my head, I think Orchid, Rosegold, Seashell, and Pink Opal would be beautiful on you!! :D

  15. Tracy@Beauty Reflections March 25, 2013 at 7:13 pm #

I need to try one of these! Everybody LOVES them! Grey pearl looks so PRETTTTTTTYYYYYYY

    • becca March 25, 2013 at 10:30 pm #

Yes Tracy, YOU DO!!! :D Oooh I am just imagining how gorgeous Mint Snow or Khaki would look on you–you need to get your hands on some and post a look so I can see!! :D

  16. Rabbit March 26, 2013 at 1:53 am #

I like the colours. I must try them :)

    • becca March 26, 2013 at 1:58 am #

Yes you definitely do–they’re truly incredible!! :) Do you normally wear a lot of cream shadow, Rabbit? If you do, these are great. Or if you’ve been searching for a long-wearing formula but haven’t had any luck then these are definitely for you!! I hope you give them a shot–let me know what you think!

  17. The Made Up Maiden March 26, 2013 at 5:17 am #

You know, I actually haven’t got anything from LM!

Very odd considering how much I love makeup, lol, I think I’ve got to remedy that immediately!

Great review, I must say I love shadow sticks for a wash of colour over the eyelid and also as bases when you want something more serious.

I’m going to look into these!

    xx

    • becca March 26, 2013 at 2:17 pm #

WHaaat–no LM?! Yes you definitely MUST remedy that with one of these Caviar Sticks ASAP!! :P LM is one of my favorite brands–you will fall in love, I know it! Try them at the counter and let me know what you think! :D

  18. Lily March 26, 2013 at 7:39 am #

These are gorgeous, Becca! I so don’t need to read this. It’s creating unnecessary lemming for me, especially during my no buy months. HAHAHA!

    • becca March 26, 2013 at 2:17 pm #

ARrgghh–I keep forgetting about your no-buy, Lily! :/ Well, you really need to keep these in mind for when you’re done. They are AWESOME on oily lids!! :D

  19. Annick March 26, 2013 at 6:36 pm #

Sooo good to know these stay on well even with very oily lids! I have such a problem when it comes to cream/stick shadows staying on my oily lids!

I LOVE Grey Pearl – I might have to give that one a try! Stunning swatches!

    • becca March 26, 2013 at 6:43 pm #

Oh you have oily lids too, huh? SUCH a pain!! :P But yes, these are great and I think you would really like them! Have you tried Bobbi Brown’s Long-Wear Cream Shadows? The wear of these Laura Mercier Caviar Sticks is VERY similar but I like the convenient twist-up packaging of LM’s–plus they have more of a variety of shades available! Try it, Annick–you will love! :D

  20. Joyce (bronzerbunny) March 27, 2013 at 8:39 pm #

OH i quite like the look of grey pearl! weird name though. but i’ll put this on the list to check out! :)

    • becca March 27, 2013 at 9:13 pm #

On the eyes, it looks much more grey–I wish the purple came through a bit more. But it is GORGEOUS when set with MAC’s Shale. Ooooh love that combo so much!! :D

  21. svetlana March 27, 2013 at 8:41 pm #

wow!… just wow. i’;; have to try. i don’t have much of eyelids and am always nervous trying anything but powder for my eyes, but i have recently ventured out when i was given a LM metallic eye color (in gold- love it!) as a gift, and it actually stayed on for quite some time without creasing. i LOVE LM products and have had nothing but good luck with her products, i think i DARE branch out to the caviar sticks. :)

    • becca March 27, 2013 at 9:14 pm #

Yaaaay–glad to hear it! I don’t think you’ll be disappointed ;) Laura Mercier really is a great brand–I’ve never been unhappy with ANY purchase from the brand!

  22. Jenni@lifeandlensofbeauty March 28, 2013 at 7:30 am #

    amethyst is a gorg. taupe!

lol they probly hadn’t trim the shadow stick properly when it was produced in the factory…and then it broke just at the same length??

    • becca March 28, 2013 at 5:09 pm #

The thought had crossed my mind but then today, Emi over at Project Swatch posted her review for Khaki and Sand Glow and it appears she had the exact same experience with the varying product amounts :/

  23. Emi at Project Swatch March 28, 2013 at 7:37 am #

Okay, so I am working on my review right now, and I noticed that the packaging for mine is like yours; my Khaki packaging is like your Amethyst packaging (more product, goes to edges, though is not off-kilter), and my Sand Glow packaging is like your Grey Pearl (less product – narrower and shorter). Plus slightly different colors for the part of the plastic inside the lid.

So, clearly there is some kind purposeful redesign with less product, but no change in the label. So weird. Going to google about it now.

    • becca March 28, 2013 at 5:10 pm #

Loved your review, Emi! Thanks again for the shoutout! Yeah definitely disappointed about the smaller product amount but really, they just need to change their label because that’s not cool! :/ Still, I love these so much and I’m so glad you’re enjoying yours as well :)

  24. Jacqueline March 29, 2013 at 2:31 am #

I love these too! Grey Pearl is just so tempting.

    • becca March 29, 2013 at 2:47 am #

I just read your review–so glad these work well for you too! AND you got Orchid, which is one of the shades I am DYING to have next! That and Sand Glow and Khaki :)

  25. Toya April 3, 2013 at 8:17 am #

Ooh, LOVING Grey Pearl Becca! I loved the idea of Amethyst but when I swatched it, it didn’t do me any favors, sadly. But Grey Pearl…yes! I’m going to have to go back and give these another look-over… And bummer about the strange size discrepany and loss of product!! :(

    • becca April 3, 2013 at 2:36 pm #

Isn’t it gorgeous?? Definitely test it out, Toya. It does sheer out quite a bit on the eyes but I think the purply-greyish taupe would be gorgeous on you!! :D

  26. BooBooNinja April 3, 2013 at 9:42 pm #

Grey Pearl is beautiful. I like to hear it didn’t crease on you. It seems like everything creases on my hooded eyes. I’ve got to try this one!

    • becca April 3, 2013 at 11:53 pm #

Yes, try it! I don’t find that it lasts any longer than Bobbi Brown’s Long-Wearing Cream Shadows on my oily lids but the shade selection is gorgeous and the twist-up packaging is so easy and convenient! I think it’d be great for hooded eyes, but remember to let it set thoroughly first!! :)
