The Sample: NEW Senna Haute Nudes Eye & Face Palette in Mystic (Review, Swatches, Photos & GIVEAWAY!)

3 Jan

««Press Sample»»

Neutral palettes are becoming increasingly popular (like Victoria’s Secret The Nakeds Palette, theBalm Nude ‘tude Palette, Lorac Unzipped Palette, and of course Urban Decay’s Naked, Naked2, and finally Naked Basics palettes…need I go on?!) and as a result, it’s sometimes hard to muster any excitement when a new one is released. Why bother when they’ve been done–and done well–before?!! Which is why it’s all the more impressive that not only was I eyeing Senna’s Haute Nudes Palettes when they were first released but when I actually tried them, I was blown away.

There are 2 versions of the Haute Nudes palette: Mystic and Sultry. Mystic is a cool-toned palette and Sultry is warm. Today, I’ll be showing you Mystic–my favorite between the two. While I do enjoy wearing browns–both warm and cool–I just have a soft spot for purple tones. Be it a rich amethyst or a cool, greyed-plum, they always make my heart go pitter-patter.

Mystic contains 6 shadows–Diamond, Halo, Dusk, Dream, Eclipse, and Black Magic. Diamond is an icy, shimmering white. Halo is a pale, pale lavender. Dusk is a beautiful mid-tone rich minky-taupe. Dream (my favorite!) is a lovely shimmering purply-taupe with a dash of silver micro-glitter. You guys know I love my purply-taupes! Eclipse is a medium-dark matte greyed-plum. And Black Magic is a super rich, inky matte black. The shades are so, so well-done and are really different from other neutral palettes out there. I LOVE neutral plums and purpled-browns, so this palette was a definite win for me!

There are also 2 cheek colors included–a highlighter/blush called Charm (a light, cool petal pink with gold micro-shimmer) and a “sheer matte” blush called First Blush (a slightly warm-leaning rosy-pink). Both shades are gorgeous! The pans are also (thankfully) a decent size. I don’t know about you guys, but I hate when blush is included in a palette but it’s in a pan the same size or only slightly bigger than the shadows. I like using a big, fluffy blush brush but there is no way I could get it to fit in a pan that small without also swiping up some eyeshadow along with it. So I really appreciate these bigger pans of blush in Senna’s palette.

The compact is made of sleek, sturdy plastic. There is a large, usable mirror inside as well as 3 brushes/applicators. Two of them are double-sided and one is a regular, miniature brush. I didn’t have high hopes for the brush but I will say that it’s actually quite soft and would do well for on-the-go touch-ups. The Liner/Smudger brush was very impressive–especially the liner side. It’s very soft and perfectly sized/shaped to really get the Black Magic shadow in between the roots of the lashes, making for an incredibly natural look. I love it!

Each palette also comes with a small booklet inside that shows you how to create 2 looks–one dramatic and one more natural–using step-by-step instructions. In the Mystic palette, the looks are called Dreamy (flirty and pretty) and Temptress (with a smoldering, sexy smoked-out eye).

I found that the shadows were incredibly soft–very smooth and finely milled. It’s interesting to note that the matte shades were done really, really well and were almost better pigmentation and texture-wise than the shimmery shades, which is not often the case. But overall, they were all soft, smooth, well-pigmented, and very easy to blend out without disappearing on you.

The shadows lasted all day over a primer and the cheek colors, about 5 1/2. I think it’s a great formula and I am happy with it! If you haven’t tried anything from Senna yet, these palettes are a great introductory product–I am blown away and have been reaching for this every day!

Pros: sleek packaging with large, usable mirror; gorgeous range of neutral, cool-toned shades that will flatter a variety of skin tones; pigmented; smooth and finely milled; pigmented and easy to blend out; very impressive quality for matte shadows; applicators are soft and the Liner/Smudger brush is not only usable but is now my preferred tool for applying shadows on the lashline

Cons:  I wish the highlighter had a more even, fine shimmer instead of micro-shimmer, but that’s really just a personal preference

beautiful swatches and this to me, is a nude palette with a spring 2013 twist – I love the pink and purple undertones.

This Christmas, I purchased some eye palettes as I find myself not having any and would love the chance to try Senna.

Pretty Squared – FB like, Twitter follow, Twitter status with giveaway link, and follow via Bloglovin.

    Gorgeous palette!!

    • becca January 3, 2013 at 8:26 pm #

Oh I completely agree with you on that, Miranda! I looove purple/plum tones on the eyes and these are so pretty and such a fresh twist on the neutral. It’s really an awesome palette!

Thanks for reading and following!! :D

  4. Agata January 4, 2013 at 1:47 am #

This palette looks beautiful. I love neutral palettes, although I have tons of eyeshadows I am always going back to my neutrals, especially when I am in a hurry.

    • becca January 4, 2013 at 2:03 am #

I really love my neutrals too! I like to play with makeup but when it comes to my everyday look, I like my neutrals a lot. I think Senna did a gorgeous take on the neutral palette. It’s different but still very wearable and exciting–and the quality is just phenomenal! I really love this! :)

      • Agata January 4, 2013 at 7:58 am #

The swatches look beautiful indeed. I can only hope I will be the winner, lol

        • becca January 4, 2013 at 2:09 pm #

          Good luck! :D

  5. Sunny January 4, 2013 at 2:56 am #

I’m partial to purply tones in eyeshadows as well, and Mystic looks like it’s got GREAT quality! Wish any UK-based webshops stock Senna, but I haven’t found one so far!

I follow you with Bloglovin’, Twitter, and I just liked your FB page :)

    • becca January 4, 2013 at 3:24 am #

Oooh yay–I’m glad you like purple tones on the eyes, too! Isn’t this palette just dreamy?!! :D

  6. Toya January 4, 2013 at 7:16 am #

I love the LOOK of all these nude palettes, but unfortunately for my skintone they kind of fall flat – a little bit TOO nude on my skin, you know what I mean? Also, palettes give me a bit of a complex – I hate having shades in there that I don’t use, so I’m a singles or well-edited duo type of gal :) But, I can see why you love this Becca, it really seems to have a great mix of shades!

    • becca January 4, 2013 at 2:05 pm #

Aw that’s too bad! Is it this palette or neutral palettes in general? Because there is a warmer sister to this palette that has really beautiful shades in it you might like…I generally prefer duos over palettes but I must honestly say, this is one of my favorite palettes ever. I have the Naked palette and have only worn it a few times :/ This palette is one I keep reaching for–I LOVE the cool, plummy tones! :D

  7. Angela January 4, 2013 at 7:27 am #

Now this is a nude palette I’d actually consider! I like that the blushes are so big!

    • becca January 4, 2013 at 2:09 pm #

Oh me too, Angela! It’s nice and easy to actually dip your brush in it! :P

  8. Jjenna O January 4, 2013 at 10:04 am #

I spent my new year together with my boyfriend and some friends :P

Thanks for reading and following, K!! :D

  10. Marianna January 4, 2013 at 11:38 am #

I can’t believe how pigmented these look on swatches! Looks like an amazing palette!

    • becca January 4, 2013 at 2:13 pm #

I did use a sponge-tipped applicator to apply heavy swatches, but still they are nicely pigmented

  11. Jasmin Moon January 4, 2013 at 1:16 pm #

I love how compact this palette is and the colors remind me so much of the naked palette! Great giveaway..Followed, Tweeted, Liked and Subscribed :)

    • becca January 4, 2013 at 2:15 pm #

Do you mean that Naked2 palette, Jasmin? Because I didn’t ever swatch that one but am curious now. I love these types of shades! I have the original Naked palette and don’t use it enough…I think I prefer cool-toned neutrals over warm ones (though both are a favorite of mine)!

  12. Makeup Morsels January 4, 2013 at 3:59 pm #

Not entering since I already own Mystic’s warm twin, but this one looks lovely. I can see why you like it so much, and Senna’s mattes are really something, aren’t they? They definitely know how to make a good eyeshadow.

    • becca January 4, 2013 at 4:23 pm #

I know–I was so impressed! I did not expect their mattes to be THAT amazing–seriously was blown away by that! The shimmers are definitely good too but oh those mattes…so silky and soft!! :D

  13. fairytalesandcoffee January 4, 2013 at 5:48 pm #

I have a soft spot for purpley shades too. I think it’s the only “floral” color that yellow ladies can wear and it will look natural and not clownish. These are very nice shades I dislike eyeshadow palettes…

    • becca January 4, 2013 at 6:33 pm #

I think I know what you mean–I’ve tried those kinds of shades and they definitely don’t flatter me. They can be done, but they have to be done juuust right. Cool purple and plummy tones are just so easy to wear and they look really nice with brown eyes too :)

  14. Solarride January 4, 2013 at 6:17 pm #

This palette is just so cute ,<

    • becca January 4, 2013 at 6:33 pm #

Isn’t it?! I love this palette so much! The warmer one, Sultry, is also really nice. Senna hit it out of the park with these palettes :)

      Thanks for reading! :D

      • Solarride January 10, 2013 at 3:50 pm #

Forgot to say I follow you on Twitter, facebook, and Bloglovin.
        Sultry is gorgeous!

  15. Becca January 4, 2013 at 8:44 pm #

I love the blushes in this palette! Thanks for the giveaway…followed via email and liked on facebook.

    • becca January 4, 2013 at 9:12 pm #

It’s nice, huh? Usually I find that I don’t like one or more of the included cheek colors in a palette but in this case, they’re both beautiful! :D

  16. Sara January 4, 2013 at 9:08 pm #

I found this blog because I was curious about the Maybelline Dream Bouncy Blushes! I looked around and found this giveaway… This blog is a keeper!! I immediately subscribed via email <3

    • becca January 4, 2013 at 9:18 pm #

I am so glad to hear you like my blog, Sara–thank you! And thank you for your recommendations too–you’re so sweet! I had a friend that used to wear Dolce & Gabbana’s Light Blue fragrance too! I like it a lot and now whenever I smell it, I always think of her! :) The Lise Watier Eye & Lip primer sounds really nice! I’m most interested in the shadows and cheek colors though. Her summer collection looked AMAZING (so sad I didn’t get a chance to try that blusher/bronzer cheek palette!) and that new blush with the rose pattern embossed on it looks insanely beautiful! I wish it were more readily accessible here!

  17. Lise' January 4, 2013 at 9:46 pm #

I adore anything Senna makes! They are very particular about every single one of their products. All their shadows and blushes have lots of pigment and payoff. I would totally love to win the Mystic palette – as purple is my favorite color, and I love these shades for my green eyes! I am following you on facebook!

    • becca January 4, 2013 at 10:28 pm #

Oooh what else have you tried, Lise–any recommendations? I have heard a LOT about their powder blushes and now that I’ve tried the ones in the palette, I can say that everyone was right. It’s sooo light and silky and pigmented but really easy to wear and blend out! :D

  20. Sarah January 5, 2013 at 3:17 am #

The blushes look really nice, really like the soft shades.

    • becca January 5, 2013 at 3:21 am #

They are pigmented but really soft, which I like. I have a tendency to overapply cheek color sometimes so a blush formula like this is just perfect for me!! :D

      Thanks for reading Sarah!

  21. Liz Figler January 5, 2013 at 7:58 am #

For New Years I had a few friends over and we played some games and then watched the countdown it was a lot of fun! :) Thanks for this giveaway<3

It’s an amazing brand! You HAVE to try their powder formula–it’s fantastic! I know Larie and Rae (from The Notice) have raved a ton about their Sheer Face Color Powder Blushes, too! I’ve only tried the blushes in these palettes but I am very eager to get my hands on more! :D

  23. Chris January 5, 2013 at 2:39 pm #

I would love to have this for my future travels :)

Ooh these shades would look so gorgeous on you!! :D

  24. Larie January 5, 2013 at 6:08 pm #

OH man, I don’t know if I can do purples, but they are so lovely and matte! This is a gorgeous palette! I follow via bloglovin and Twitter ;)

    • becca January 5, 2013 at 10:52 pm #

Aw I know you don’t like purples, Larie, but this one has such neutral, subtle purple/plum tones, maybe it will work for you? :D

  25. Liz January 5, 2013 at 8:53 pm #

Interesting that this is called a nude palette because these shades aren’t exactly skin tone. But nonetheless, the shades are lovely. My fave is Eclipse. :)

    • becca January 5, 2013 at 10:54 pm #

It is interesting! I don’t know that I’d call them nudes, but I do think it’s a fresh spin on neutrals. LOVE this one!! :D

  26. Dara January 6, 2013 at 2:59 pm #

I think I like this one more because of the shimmery colors. I like purple too! Thank you! I follow you through email
