The Sample: Hourglass Visionaire Eye Shadow Duo in Dune (Review, Swatches & Photos)

14 Jun

I have been totally lusting after the Hourglass Visionaire Eye Shadow Duo in Dune ever since a.) seeing it on Karen at Makeup and Beauty Blog, and b.) trying out Suede and falling. in. love. Yes, it was truly love by association. I won’t go into too much depth on this shadow since I very recently reviewed Suede (click here to see the review). This post is mainly to just show you the swatches of Dune and to affirm my love for Hourglass’ eye shadow formula. It’s truly remarkable stuff.

Dune is a lovely duo comprised of a shimmering golden-champagne-y-cream (yes, that’s my description and I’m sticking to it!), and a blackened-olive with bronze and green shimmer. Please note that the green shade does look a lot more green in the pan then it does on the skin–so if you are able to, I suggest having a swatch before purchasing. These 2 shades go well together and are undeniably beautiful. Put in just a little effort and you’re sure to find dupes (or close enough) of both of these shades somewhere, but why would you want to?! The main draw here is the sinfully luxurious texture. One swatch and you’ll understand why people go gaga over these.

Like Suede, Dune is perfectly buttery-soft and so smooth and easy to apply. It blends like nobody’s business! Though they are very rich in color, it’s not so pigmented that it can be hard to work with and/or blend out. On the contrary, I can just throw these on my lids with wild abandon because I’m confidant that if it looks too dark or I’ve applied too much, I can blend it out seamlessly with just a few passes of my brush. Simple and stress-free–these shadows are literally foolproof! Because the texture is so unbelievably soft, it is to be expected that it does kick up a bit of powder in the pan. Nothing out of the ordinary though.

Without a primer, Dune lasted an impressive (for my oily lids) hour and a half. With a primer, there was no stopping this duo from morning to night. My eyeshadow looked just as fresh and vibrant and pretty at 1 o’clock in the morning as it did when I applied it at noon. Now that is truly impressive by anyone’s standards! Oh, and just so you know–you can apply these wet or dry. Applying them wet will surely help with the wear time if you choose to forgo primer.

*please note: I know that the blackened-olive shade looks more black than anything in swatches but actually, on the eyes, that lovely hint of green really does come through. So just in case you were worried this duo would make it look like you have 2 nasty black eyes, it won’t.

As I’ve said before, these Hourglass duos are a bit pricey–but are truly worth it, in my opinion. They’re silky and soft, super blendable, pigmented, and suit a wide variety of skin tones. Plus they contain a crapload of product (0.2 oz.–whereas Nars Duos contain 0.14 oz. and Chanel’s Ombres Contraste duo contains a sad 0.09 oz.), so you are very much so getting your money’s worth. In short, the Visionaire duos are truly in a class of their own! Hourglass releases shades that are effortlessly cool and suit just about everyone. If you’re in the market for a beautiful, wearable, and amazingly high quality eyeshadow duo, try them out. You won’t be sorry!

Pros: has a formula that is literally soft as silk, smooth as butter, and blends like a dream; though pricey, these come with quite a bit of product; super pigmented; come in flattering and perfectly coordinating shades; long-wearing; accompanying brush is actually soft and usable; swivel packaging is well-made

Cons: because the shadows are so soft, they kick up a little dust in the pan

I agree! These are amazing shadows! They last FOREVER on the lids. I really want Suede I think now!

Suede is super super pretty too! I think you’ll love it. They’re not really unique shades but the buttery, silky textures more than makes them stand out. I love having Suede and Dune–one is great for a neutral day look and one is perfect for a smokey, eye that’s not the typical black or gray–it keeps it interesting! I do hope you get Suede, Tracy–you’ll love it!

I’m shacking my fist at you and Tracy; you;’re making me want to get Dune so badly! That blackened-olive is such a stunner. <3

It really is, isn’t it? At first glance, one might make the mistake of thinking it’s a pretty ordinary duo–but the bronze and green shimmers in the blackened-olive base is sooo pretty and interesting! I’m surprised it comes through on the lids so well, but it really makes all the difference in the world! Get it get it get it! :D

    *drool* that is all.

Ok, not really hahah. I lovee this color combo, and the way you described that formula…I really need this, don’t I? :P

    Also, 1 am?! Geez.

    • becca June 14, 2012 at 9:00 am #

Lol–that is nothing. I’ve stayed up til 5 AM testing a product once (speaking of which, whatever did I do with that review?…)

And YES–enthusiastic YES! You need this! Once you’ve tried it, you’ll wonder how on earth you ever got along without it! :) I think it’ll flatter your fair complexion and dark hair really well, too!

Ooo Becca I’m going to review this thing tomorrow LOL. I laid my hands on it a couple of weeks ago and there are things that I’m not 100% convinced about (like how it swatches on bare skin. For some reason the dark shade in my duo doesn’t seem as impressive), but all in all I’d still recommend it! Now I really want to look into Hourglass a bit more ;)

    • becca June 14, 2012 at 10:58 am #

Lol really? First Tracy, then me, then you! It seems I’m the only one out of all of us that truly fell in love though. Tracy seemed a little iffy as well. Is it because the darker shade is too dark? When I first read reviews on it I was hoping for something a bit greener–but after playing with it, I realize that it’s truly a unique shade and I love it!

  5. Larie June 14, 2012 at 7:19 pm #

That dark shade is so stunningly beautiful, but again! Ingredients! *cries* I have an Hourglass lip stain and it is pure love, though :D :D :D

    • becca June 14, 2012 at 8:43 pm #

Oh no–I’m so sorry, Larie! :( Next time I will be sure to put a little disclaimer at the top stating that the product contains parabens and if you name is Larie, you should turn back now before it’s too late! :P Well at least you were able to try the lip stain! I need to get around to doing that–they look beautiful! Do you have the petal shade? That’s the one I want, but I looooove a good peachy-pink!

      • Larie June 14, 2012 at 9:00 pm #

Haha, oh no, I don’t mind :D I prefer seeing ingredients anyway, (thank you!) and I’m happy just to ogle pretty things with people :D I have Flush, which is an amazing strawberry shade.

        • becca June 14, 2012 at 11:26 pm #

ooh that sounds pretty! When I looked at Flush online, I thought it might be a little darker/more pigmented than I’m used to (still not fully comfortable with super pigmented lips yet!)–but I’ll have to try it now!

  6. Shivani June 14, 2012 at 11:15 pm #

Soo stunning. I need to invest in one ASAP. Love, love, love the packaging and pigmentation.

    • becca June 14, 2012 at 11:22 pm #

Yes you definitely do!!! Just put aside $5 every week until you can get one–it is WORTH it! :D I’m starting to eye the Exhibition duo now–THAT one looks amazing! I think Exhibition or Dune would look fantastic with your lovely eyes and complexion. Think about it!

  7. Rinny June 16, 2012 at 2:57 am #

$38 is really pricey, but if they last as long as you say they do, I think they are worth it, definitely. The olive shade really does look almost black in your pictures, but I’m sure it must look lovely in real life. I love the swivel design packaging too – very cool!

    • becca June 16, 2012 at 5:26 am #

Yes, the olive shade is quite dark–I was very surprised the first time I swatched it, but once I got over the initial disappointment, I actually really liked it. I just had to think of it as a totally different color and not keep wishing it was a true olive green. These are definitely worth it though, and Hourglass has 5 other amazing duos to choose from. I am definitely going for the purple one next!!!

  8. Vonvon June 16, 2012 at 11:49 am #

This is a brand I haven’t tried, though heard many good reviews on them.

And this duo is so pretty.

    • becca June 16, 2012 at 12:01 pm #

There are 5 other duos to choose from too, Vonvon!! So if you’re not really feeling this one, be sure to check out the others. Suede is a beautiful neutral one and Exhibition (next on my list) is a GORGEOUS purple/mauve duo. Either way, Hourglass is an amazing brand and I can’t recommend it more!

  9. Popblush June 16, 2012 at 2:41 pm #

I absolutely love buttery textured eyeshadows. This duo is so pretty, the shades so wearable and flattering.

Although pricey they seem worth it!

    • becca June 16, 2012 at 9:04 pm #

Yes, they definitely are! Between the wearable colors, the dreamy texture, and the hefty amount, I’d say it was a good buy all around! Do check them out!

  10. Memoiselle June 18, 2012 at 1:27 am #

this is my first visit to your site and I like it :)
I have never tried hourglass eyeshadow yet. This one looks great, very wearable and pigmented.

  11. Paris B June 21, 2012 at 8:06 am #

Ok so how is it that I’ve never come across your blog?! Its amazing! :D I love your photos and prose and erm… everything ;) Thanks for coming by my blog or I may have not found yours :D

p/s I ordered this one from Zuneta but my package seems to be lost in the mail boohoo :(

    • becca June 21, 2012 at 9:31 am #

aw, thanks Paris! That means a lot coming from you because I just love your blog!

That sucks about your lost package. How long ago were you supposed to get it? That is precisely why I *loathe* ordering makeup from online. There always seems to be one problem or another. I hope you get it soon because you’ll love it!

      • Paris B June 22, 2012 at 1:59 pm #

Its over 3weeks now :( will be getting back in touch by next week. I have no choice. We don’t have Hourglass here so online is my best bet. Fingers crossed!!
