The Sample: NEW Burberry Lip Mist Natural Sheer Lipstick in No.213 Field Rose (Review, Swatches & Photos)

9 Jun

So most of you are well aware by now that I don’t do lipstick. Well, opaque, full-coverage lipsticks anyway–as evident by the profusion of reviews on tinted lip balms and sheer colors on this blog. But recently, I did something that surprised even me: I paid $30. For a lipstick. It was a big moment, obviously. Now granted, this lipstick of which I speak is Burberry’s Lip Mist–but that still counts…right?! Baby steps, people!

Field Rose was released as part of the Summer 2012 Iconic Nude Collection and is now a permanent shade. Lip Mist is a “creamy lipstick [that] offers a hint of natural, sheer color [and] …leaves lips with a moist, dewy finish.” It is described by Burberry as having a “lightweight, creamy texture and gelled structure [that] allows for effortless control and glide”, “contains moisturising emollients and wild rose extract for long-lasting hydration and protection”, and is meant to provide a “a sheer illuminating finish with a subtle hint of colour.” I couldn’t have said it better myself! The texture of this is divine! It’s smooth and lightweight and extremely moisturizing. I don’t ever feel the need to apply a balm before applying this. On the contrary, I feel that if I apply a balm before applying Field Rose, it hinders the amount of color-payoff I get. It’s so slick and thin that it kind of needs the dry surface of your lips to hold on to and deposit color. Burberry’s suggestion is to “apply with the finger for a natural look, apply twice for a stronger colour.”

Field Rose is a soft, slightly nude rosy-pink with a fine smattering of microshimmers throughout. The color is SO  “my lips but better”. It really is, due to both the sheerness of the formula and the color itself. Field Rose adds the most luxurious, lovely veil of color to your lips, making it look like your lips really are that naturally pink and pretty and glossy. As with all Burberry products (at least all the ones I’ve tried), it’s pretty much impossible to overdo it with this color. You can layer and layer to your heart’s content but you’ll always end up with the same thing: perfectly semi-glossy, naturally juicy and plump rosy lips. Again, because the product is so sheer and because the rosy hue is so neutral, it will flatter literally everyone.

Now I must warn you: like most of Burberry’s other products, the Lip Mists are scented. It is the same powdery-floral fragrance that I described in previous Burberry reviews (here and here). While I did like the scent, it wasn’t so bothersome when it was on my cheeks. But when it’s on your lips, it’s like bam! There’s really no getting around it–so if you’re sensitive to fragrance or just plain hate this one, you should just pass on these. I don’t really like that it is so heavily-scented, but honestly I love the look and feel of it so much that I’ll forgive this one flaw. It is so strong when I first apply it that I literally feel like I can taste the perfume (though the product itself does not have a taste)–and the scent does not dissipate quickly, either. Field Rose wore for a little over 3 hours on my lips, and the scent stuck with me for almost the entire time. I will say, though, that the longer it’s on your lips, the more diminished the scent becomes. Also, the more I wear Field Rose, the less I seem to notice the scent. *UPDATE: I have come to love this scent and look forward to applying this lipstick now just so I can smell it :P

Field Rose after one pass on left and layered on right

Ok, so the wear time leaves a little something to be desired–but that’s the trade-off when you have such an intensely slick and moisturizing formula. I don’t think 3 hours and change is too shabby at all. Don’t expect it to hang on through a meal, though. Field Rose quickly succumbed to my midnight snack of apples and peanut butter (plus a Vita Coco drink box) after only an hour of prior wear. But I guess I am a bit of a…how do I put this lightly?…enthusiastic eater? Yeah, we’ll go with that. Meals aside, I personally don’t mind having to reapply every 3 hours or so because the product is so easy to apply–plus, it just feels so lovely on the lips. It doesn’t hurt that the packaging for Burberry cosmetics is so nice, either. Who wouldn’t want to whip out this chic bullet in public?

Like the blush compacts, the Lip Mists are housed in a gunmetal-gray metal-encased plastic tube. The tube design is square and features a magnetized closure. It’s interesting because if you fail to put the cap back on correctly (you’ll be able to feel the magnets repel), the cap will twist itself back into place. I swear the whole thing is like a work of art–it’s really very cool looking.

I also got a sample booklet containing a small lip brush and samples of the Copper, Rosy Red, Blueberry, and Feather Pink Lip Mists. I swatched them for you below. What was most surprising to me was that I loved every single one of them–even Blueberry, which turned out to be one of my favorites! Shocking, I know. In the vein of Clinique Black Honey, I think Burberry’s Blueberry (say that ten times fast!) will look fantastic on absolutely everyone! I’ve never before in my life imagined that I would even consider purchasing a shade like Blueberry–but I want it bad! Seriously though, all the Lip Mist shades are so damn flattering and wearable. They chose beautiful, timeless colors that will never go out of style. The sheerness of the product makes it flattering for everyone and also renders it appropriate for day or night.

L to R: No. 202 Copper, No.205 Rosy Red, No.206 Blueberry, No.209 Feather Pink

Aaand all the shades together!

Burberry cosmetics are pricey–there’s no getting around that. But just think, the similar Chanel Rouge Coco Shines go for $32.50/0.1 oz. With the Lip Mists, you’re getting 0.02 oz. more product for $2.50 less. That’s all the convincing I need! Plus, I just feel like I will get a lot more use out of it than a full-coverage, opaque lipstick–so it’s very worth it to me. I don’t even need a mirror to apply, it’s so easy–and easy is good in my book. I love the look of bright, bold lips on other people, but it just doesn’t fit my personality or lifestyle. I just can’t be bothered with a high-maintenance lip product, so the Lip Mists suit me perfectly! Whether or not it will be a worthwhile purchase for you is up to you to decide. All I know is, this lipstick is unreal and I can’t wait to get my hands on more (Blueberry and Feather Pink, I’m lookin’ at you)!!!

Pros: texture is very thin and smooth and  moisturizing; lips remain moisturized even after product has worn off; pretty glossy finish; super comfortable on the lips; the level of pigmentation is so perfect that every color, no matter how dark/bright, looks like a “my lips but better” shade; packaging is spot-on

Cons: if you have a sensitive sniffer, stay away!; wear time is a bit short for these–but that’s to be expected with this type of formula; love these–don’t love the price :/

Ooh, what a perfect MLBB shade! I love nudes with a touch of pink! <3

I am also an "ethusiastic eater." :p

Lol, I try to eat all proper and ladylike–but I just get so excited about good food! :P

And yes, this really is a beautiful MLBB shade–it adds just the right amount of color to where you can see it but you never have to worry about it. I LOVE it!

Ooooh, Rosy Red! So pretty. Also, just you wait, my pretty, keep reading blogs and you will be a lipstick wearer in no time :P

Lol nooooo! I don’t think my wallet can take it! It was fine when I was just obsessed with eyeshadow, blush and highlighter…but now I’ve added bronzer AND lipstick to the mix?? :/

Isn’t Rosy Red gorgeous, though? and aren’t they ALL, for that matter? I haven’t ever been so enamored with a lipstick…but I can’t WAIT to get Blueberry (it looks dark in the swatch, but on the lips, its a really translucent berry-red tint)

This color looks really pretty! It looks like it would be suitable for almost any skintone, and I love how it leans slightly on the nude side too. Great product and swatch photos, as always Becca :)

    • becca June 10, 2012 at 9:24 pm #

Thanks Rinny!!! :) Yeah, I really do love this color and can see it working on just about everyone! Have you tried any Lip Mists? If not, do you think you will?

This is SO pretty!!! I can see it being one of the most versatile shades around! (And you had Vita Coco? Lucky you! I got ADDICTED to that thing during my trip to the US last year, and I’ve been able to find it at one supermarket but it costs a little fortune!)

    • becca June 11, 2012 at 8:59 pm #

Oh no! That’s not cool–EVERYONE should have easy access to Vita Coco. It’s truly amazing stuff! Did you try the flavored ones?? I *love* the gauva one and the pineapple one–my 2 favorites by far! I guess you could just buy unflavored organic coconut juice (if that’s cheaper) and flavor it with fresh pineapple juice! Either way, I am craving one now…

Oh yes, and lipstick. Right. It’s pretty :P

I love the Burberry brand and have wanted to try Feather Pink for such a long time. Field Rose looks great as well. Thanks for the great review! :)

    • becca June 12, 2012 at 8:53 pm #

Feather Pink is super gorgeous and so glossy and pretty! I’m thinking of getting it to use on my sister for her wedding (and of course if I should happen to get a lot of use out of it after that, all the better, right? ;) ).

I think that Feather Pink would look AMAZING on your fair skin, though. You should definitely get it!!!

I have Copper and adore it!! Burberry can do no wrong in my eyes! This one is gorgeous! That Rosy Red-I wants!

    • becca June 12, 2012 at 8:57 pm #

You chose well, Tracy! I can’t think of a color from the line that would suit you better than Copper….except maybe all of them. They’re just so darn wearable–how can anybody, beauty addict or not, resist?!

I want to buy one of these just so I can whip it out in public :D :D Love the pattern on the lipstick, and the colors are awesome!

    • becca June 13, 2012 at 10:26 am #

Lol I know the feeling! I definitely use every opportunity to show off this beautiful creation. :P

I’ve never tried Burberry lipstick before and don’t think I will after hearing about the scent, yuck. Too bad, cause the shades do look quite nice.

    • becca June 15, 2012 at 9:53 pm #

Are you extremely sensitive to scented products, Amanda? I didn’t mean to scare you away from these…they are quite lovely–but I suppose if you are very sensitive to fragrance, this won’t work for you. In it’s defense though–after I’ve been wearing it a couple of weeks now, I only really notice the scent the first 20 minutes or so that I’m wearing it. After that, it’s fine! I think I’m quite used to it now…if that helps :P

Field rose and Rosy Red is all i need for the rest of my summer- thank you! The end!

    • becca June 18, 2012 at 4:05 am #

I know, they are really great for summer–every one of them! They add the absolute perfect amount of color and shine and really polish your look without going overboard! Love these!!!

Its nice that almost everything on the first page of your blog is something I’m interested in seeing reviewed – I love the look of these and hope to try Blueberry (This looks like a MLBB shade for me – my lips are very pigmented) and Rosy Red when I’m shopping next.

I’m a sheer lipstick girl, too! I much prefer a sheer lipstick to a gloss.

    • Alison June 30, 2012 at 3:33 pm #

I forgot to add that the packaging for these slays me. It twists into place? Brilliant!

      • becca June 30, 2012 at 6:35 pm #

Lucky you with your pigmented lips (the complete opposite of my pale, corpse lips!)–I’m sure Blueberry will look fabulous on you! It’s a very flattering shade. You must definitely check it out! Do you live near a Burberry counter?

And yes, it’s always so cool watching the cap spin itself back into place. I get a huge kick out of it :P
