Summer has me Feeling Blue…
15 Apr

…blue mascara, that is!! As you may or may not have noticed, blue mascara has become somewhat of a trend for summer 2012–beauty brands left and right have embraced the return of blue mascara and are releasing their own takes just in time for the warmer months. And who can blame them?! As soon as I saw the photos from Stella McCartney’s Fall 2012 show, I knew I had to make the look mine and have been searching for the perfect blue shade and formula ever since. Looks like Guerlain, YSL, and Laura Mercier were all similarly inspired!
Guerlain’s forthcoming collection for summer 2012 is a completely lust-worthy marriage between Guerlain and Pucci–aptly called Guerlain x Pucci Terra Azzura Collection. It features a variety of gorgeous products–but the one I’m most interested in is their new limited-edition Guerlain Le 2 de Guerlain Mascara in #14 Blu 2 Pucci. This iconic mascara boasts 2 wands: a larger one for a “multidimensional result”and a smaller one for coating smaller, finer lashes–like the ones at the corners of the eye. Used together, they work to give you thick, bold, perfectly curled and separated lashes. At $36 a pop, this is a luxury mascara in every sense of the word. Available now at Sephora (online only), and Neiman Marcus on May 1st.

I’m sure everyone is familiar with the iconic Yves Saint Laurent Mascara Volume Effet Faux Cils by now–wether you’ve tried it or not. For summer, YSL has updated their beloved formula to be waterproof. Available in 2 colors, Nº 4 Majorelle Blue (permanent) and Nº2 Burnt Brown (which sounds hideous. I much prefer the name Gold Sand [which is the color name in Canada as per beautezine.com]–but for whatever reason, YSL has named this beautiful limited-edition golden color “Burnt Brown” for its US release), these beauties are the perfect subtle pop of color for those who want a fun look but prefer not to wear brightly colored shadows. Paired with an otherwise minimal look, it’s demure enough for the office but bright and pretty enough for a day at the beach. The Volume Effet Faux Cils Waterproof Mascara is $30 and is available now online at YSL Beauty and for pre-order at Barneys.
Laura Mercier Long Lash Mascara adds Bleu to the color line-up, joining their only other color: Black. The mascara “extends and precisely separates the thinnest, shortest, hard-to-reach lashes by expertly scooping up and lengthening each lash while delivering the right amount of product”. The beautiful, cobalt-blue shade is a first for Laura Mercier–she has never released a tinted mascara before. Sadly, it is limited edition–so if you love Laura Mercier’s Long Lash Mascara and have always wished it came in a different shade, be sure to check this out before it’s too late!! This tube is $24 and is available now online at Laura Mercier.

If you’ve been wanting to try out the blue-lashed look for summer but weren’t keen on any of the above options (whether due to price, color, whatever), here’s a tip you might find helpful: if you have any kind of blue loose pigment at home, just mix with a mixing medium or clear mascara and voilà: a blue lash tint! The benefit of making your own is you get to customize the exact shade of blue you want! Play around and have fun with it!
If you aren’t comfortable with wearing color on your lashes and want to work your way up to it, try a darker blue or just painting the very tips of you lashes blue. If you have very dark lashes and are having trouble getting the blue to show up, then try first coating your lashes thoroughly with a white lash primer (I like the Lancôme Cils Booster XL).
So what do you think? Do you heart blue lashes or do you think blue lashes need to stay in the 80′s/90′s?? Do you think blue lashes pair well with the other “it” summer color, coral/tangerine? Share!
